The Meaning Behind Memorial Day
Originally known as Decoration Day after the Civil War, Memorial Day began as a way for Americans to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. Over time, it became a national day of remembrance for all U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country.
It is important to remember that Memorial Day is different from Veterans Day.
Veterans Day honors all who served.
Memorial Day specifically honors those who never returned home.
That distinction matters.
Across generations — from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War to Iraq and Afghanistan — countless Americans answered the call to serve knowing the risks involved. Some paid the ultimate price so future generations could continue living in freedom.
